Suppose, but the quality wasn't as good as CD's so there wasn't really an advantage

Cosmo is correct, was the fact they weren't a good enough alternative to cd's, mp3 came after.

Things don't always end up dead when that happens though, bluetooth struggled for years before the boom, look at it now.
