I would say a LCR or Astra MK4 turbo variety over the clio.
Granted ive only had the 172's but after having a astra Mk4 GSi before, it would definatly be the more comfy car for that kinda mileage, it depends how you like to drive your cars!
The Astra is soooo easy to drive if you arnt in the mood for ragging it to get some speed, the turbo kicks in low and so you havnt got to thrash it!
THe clio however loves the revs and there for for me you always have to be giving a fair bit to keep the momentum going.

What about a E36 3.2 M3 Evo?
Would you be able to insure a group 20 car?

Well if you actually want to go fast and have plenty of power and have a real drivers car (RWD) then I would recomend atleast looking at a M3.
How old are you?
There is no chance insuring one if you are under 21.
I have driven all the cars you are looking at and none of them are in the same league as the BMW. I know people slate them as posing cars but they really are well built, so much better than most of the cars you are looking at.
But thats just my opinion and I am sure people have differing opinions

Im nearly 22 and the best price I have found so far is 1.5k insurance
I think I may wait till I am 25
Try a price on a E36 328 sport, or a E46 330d

Astra Gsi Turbo is only group 15
try group 16 and the Clio is also group16 however the Clio is more to insure as its a high risk car. Pay £100 more than I paid for my GSi a year ago.
I do around 600 miles a week in my 182 and at first it was a bit of a shock as I had been used to crusing in the GSi.
Now it doesnt bother me and I love taking the back roads on the way home giving it some yehhaawww
That Trophy for sub 8k has to be a Cat D/C as thats far too cheap.
If you do mega miles dont get a trophy as they only sell with low miles and the Sach remot resevoir dampers cost 1k a corner to replace dependent on millage.

Out of those two, I'd have the Clio.
But, I don't think I'd spend my 8k on either.

I am in the same kind of boat and after having a few test drives and a think I think I have decided on getting a CTR
Can pick up a pre facelift one in your budget and imo are still quite an entertaining car to drive
Only downer is that it is £300 more to insure for me then a 182, however for the extra size and hope of jap reliability I am prepared to pay it.
Drives supercharged Tec with torque
