TBH mate iv driven loads of clio sports including cups etc. I own a ph2 172 at the mo
My opinion is that the FF 172 is actuly quicker on the raods than the cup. The reason being theres no 'real' difference in straight line speed, but the clio has very powerfull breaks. When im ragging it through the lanes where i live (which it loves) the abs is contatly kicking in at all speeds to stop the wheels locking up. This gives you far more confidence as the cup dosnt have ABS.
If you have propper awsome driving skills, and are manly going to use it on the track, go for a cup. If not get a normal version.

Clutches are utter shite though.
Good point, in the renault sport car club the most powerfull we have seen tested (on nick hills rollers at hillpower) was about 167 , most make between 155-160 standrad from what iv seen

Is it? The 5 door versions are slightly bigger than the 5 door MK3 equivelant but I thought the 3 door I saw at Skurrays recently looked a bit smaller?
Everything is getting sodding bigger now? Manufacturers obsessed with air con and leather and gimmicks not needed in a car you just want to hoon around in.
Still as far as the common market is concerned the 172/182 and the Corsa VXR ARE comparible.

im also asking myself this question...moving on from a corsa to a clio 172...i'm after the ph1 just cus think its cool...is meant to be however the best one's hence "ph-quik" which means in clio talk phase quick lol...just considering rivals...i'd put the saxo vts and 106 gti against it...as they did in top gear lol. the clio and vts/gti's where/are meant to be some of the best front wheel cars around for handling.
I've driven a ph1 1.2 clio and the driving position is horrible! same in a 1.5 dci ph 2 ive driven aswell, so that will take abit to get used to i guess...budgets on my agenda too! do i get a mint saxo vts for say £2000....or save longer for the 172?? cam belts are to look out for aparently £500 to change????!!! confused at that lol neither the less im considering one...and sure its going to break lots...starting with the shite handles lol, may aswell buy spare ones
