I'd have a guess that unless you are actually a mass murdering rapist you probably can't claim anything back.

There well within their rights to arrest you as a suspect & hold you for so many hours while following their lines of enquiry at which point they either need to formally arrest you or release you. You dont get mad or recieve compensation!!

How long were you there for??

Ive been nicked twice

Once for fighting with a neighbour, threatened to get done with assault, later dropped to breach of the peace then finally recieved a warning. was in cells 2 hrs.

Another time for suspected drug dealings, 6hr sit in & interrogation, bolloking from the beat officer for my area, thought he was going to burst me in the cells good cop bad cop style Had my car searched & threatened to do my rents house next, then they timed out & released without charge.

I spent 7 hours in the cells once and it was the longest most boring night of my life.

The only thing to do was take a piss

you can be held for 24hrs from time of authorised detention ie when the custody sgt says you are being detained. you will be charged, released or detained further following authorisation from a superintendent

why an apology? you have been arrested on suspicion of a crime, evidence found at scene linking you to the scene. as not a valid reason ie current employee for your fingerprint on scene, it is necessary to arrest and detain in order to establish your involvement, in this instance by questioning. it is how the system works. as law abiding people it isnt the nicest of experiences, but if the smack rat who robbed your house / car / you, you wouldnt be expcting the police to apologise to him if they pulled him in on suspicion and then found out it wasnt him ( or couldnt prove it was him. would you?

There was a rape in my mates area a few years ago. Police asked for people to give voluntary DNA samples just to remove them from suspision. My mate agreed, gave a sample a few days later police come and arrested him for it.

Later that day he got released and told there had been a slight error

He must've been bricking it. Imagine knowing you're innocent, yet the police say they have proof you raped someone

he isnt a smack rat (WTF!) though, and was 100% innocent and kept in the cells for 15hrs, so I'd say yeah he does deserve just a simple sorry.
