My point is, I spent 4 years at college and 8 years in that particular job. I now work in an office doing something totally unrelated. He needs to think carefully about what he wants to do.

Best thing to do is focus on what you enjoy doing and trying to make a career out of it - whats the point in living your whole life being stuck in a job that your not arsed about doing, lifes too short - focus on what you would ENJOY doing and start from there - obviously its not gonna be easy but hell, you only live once so its gotta be worth doing something you wanna wake up for.

that is kind of how I think, but I have to be realistic and thats when it goes to pot! Suppose its alot of luck, just getting frustrating at the minute, getting up for 6am to go work with Polish who hardly speak or some fuckwit chav with half a brain aint doing it for me.
Graham, thats my only option at the minute. Suppose it's alot of luck.

But still...he and not many other people of his (our) generation will be doing the same line of work all our life IMO

I've been a sparky for 10 years (or 10 years since I started my apprenticeship anyway) Although i've travelled for nearly 2 years out of that.

I'm ready for doing something different already - I was waking up in the morning thinking, god damn, another day at work.

I know i'm gonna be working til i'm at least 67 coz I aint got no pension or rubbish like that, i'd rather spend while i'm young and fit. I dont mind knowing i'm gonna be working til i'm old coz I also know that between now and retirement i'm gonna spend many many years just travelling round and seeing the world.

With that in mind he could choose a career now that would benefit him should he wish to change direction in years to come.

I've been think about it for years, did some shitty business studies double a level after leaving school, hated that, had a few jobs after that, thought to myself, i can't do this shit for the rest of my life but didn't know what to do, so i went back and studied law, psychology and PE as I found them interesting, Ended up doing a degree in Health and Sports studies as I still didn't know what to do so thought i'd carry on with the "do something of interest theme" now i'm back to square one, as there isn't many jobs in that field. Although I had show I can study to degree level, which counts for pretty much fuck all.

I'm more in for a average to low paid job, with high personal rewards, an oppurtuinity to travel and something based on my own interests.

Hopefully by summer next year my freelance photography work is gonna have picked up - if I can get 2-3 days work a week i'll look at switching to doing it full time - maybe even just stock photography - i'm totally updating my portfolio as of next week.
