Would you get sent to prison for 144mph in a 30mph limit im sure a police officer went quite fast through a few 30's a while back !
EDIT. i got a 28day ban for in excess of 70mph in a 70. i had to go to court and give evidence etc. 2x police officers were there stating that they were doing 120mph and felt it was too dangerous to go any faster. i was going 145mph indicated and it was raining. but was not classed as dangerous. for everyone that is going to bitch. it was 3am and no other cars on the road. and the police did not catch the car but i was arrested for failing to stop. but that was later dropped. i went not guity and was found guilty!!!
The good old days

I don't know why everyone see's it as being so unreasonable...
At the end of the day a dual carriageway that's empty late at night is as safe as any motorway, as long as you've got your eyes open to traffic joining etc.
I can hit 120 mph fairly quickly in my car - (I was hitting 120 mph down one of the straights at castle combe)... Say I join a dual carriageway doing 70 mph I could probably be at 120 mph in another 1/2 a mile or so...
At this point it could be completely clear, a stretch with no off / on ramps, good road conditions and perfectly straight. It would then be perfectly safe to do this speed (bar risk of blow out). but becuase there's a police officer in a bush, you get fucked over.
If it's anything like where I live, they've taken loads of roads that used to be national speed limit and reduced them to 50's - EVERYWHERE, country lanes, dual carriageways etc...
They're reasoning is to help with reducing pollution by making people drive slower... FFS the road's were safe enough to be doing 70 mph down them before, now I have to sit at 50 mph. Fuck off, I regularly do at least 80-90 mph down them, which means I'm 40 mph over the limit... but is that unsafe? was it unsafe when the limit was 70?
Bla bla bla - rant rant rant...

Problem with modern day cars and an out of date speed limit. I can be at 120 before I'm even off the slip road

I think they should raise the limit to 80 really, and on some motorways at night maybe raise it to 100. Can't see a problem with cruising at 100 from 11pm-5am on most major motorways. I bet a modern car will stop quicker from 100 than a car in the 1960s would stop from 70.

120 in a 50!?!?!?!?!?!
Wouldn't like to be the recieving end of that one!
I did 110 in a 70, got a 3 week ban and £135 fine.
120 in a 50 is going to carry some weight!!

the 70mph speed limit is based on the stopping capabilities of a 1970 ford Anglia with drum brakes all round lol

I can see how 70-90mph could be quite possible on that stretch of the a55 used to drive upto north wales from the midlands every day and always found it difficult to keep my speed down through that section though 100+ is risky

Thats why I love it over here, can spank along at whatever speed your car is capable of/you are comfortable at. And because everyones concentrating on the road not the speedo, it all flows nicely along.
If you do see brake lights, you know it's for a damn good reason, not just some wally jamming on cos he's hit 71mph. I like the bits (usually uphill) where they have minimum speed limits and no lorries overtaking, it's awesome.

That would be getting off extremely lightly. He was going over twice the limit I reckon he'd be lucky to get away with a one year ban and a hefty fine.

If you do something bad here they will come down hard on you, but it's far more liberal in respect of driving. I was telling them about the UK ANPR system yesterday and they were all shocked/amazed. They don't know what Gatsos or SPECs are either

realisticly,
i got caught at a top speed of 139mph on a 70
my average was 104.3 over 2miles
i got a 6month ban and £300 fine
anything over 100 is considered dangerous driving which carries a minimum 12month ban £1000fiine and re-sit
i got my charge dropped to careless driving, hence my punishment,

Ditto, they have done this on some a roads in notts aswell (drive down a few everyday). Extremely flat and they know people can his serious speed so they put it down to 40 mph at one point
