What is the dispute about?

Essentially, it is over pay and potential job cuts.

The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) has rejected a 2.5% pay offer and warned that Royal Mail's modernisation plans will lead to 40,000 job losses.

Postal workers' pay should rise to the national average over the next five years, the union argues, but Royal Mail says this would amount to a 27% increase which it could not afford.

IMO they're doing themselves out of a job - if they are planning to modernise and get rid of alot of jobs (which will probably be spread over a long period anyway) then it'd because of cost. Turning round and saying the 40,000 people who we now don't want you to sack also want a pay rise with the rest of us doesn't sound the most clever plan of attack to me .

It's probably worth noting that Royal Mail took a big drop in profits/sales a year or two back when other companies cherry picked the best buisness delivery contracts when the rules on mail were changed and RM lost their monopoly. The only way they can turn that around to be able to compete is to modernise and cut costs.

Yeah you need to stand up for yourselves, but at the end of the day the company will do what it wants. It's the workforce & company that needs to comprimise to make the situation better. The workforce trying to take with both hands is asking for trouble.

Redundancy/modernisation is a fact of life, they should deal with it.

My mum works for them and she is on strike, and it isnt about pay, its about they are trying to make all the jobs flexitime, which means she would have to work her contracted hours whenever they routered her for, not so bad for my mum but people with little kids etc will not be able to do it so i think its very fair they are on strike!

Strike finishes on Tueday PM

it is partially about pay, they are moaning at the 2.5% they got, so yes some of it is about pay.

Strikes pisses me off too, needing to post 3 things and waiting on 2 arriving...But it's all down to the unions...Any wee problem and it's right lets strike...

They strike all the time...

If everywork place had the same attitude and type of unions no one would be in work as we would all be on strike constantly about things we don't like or want changed FFS

Its pretty good pay and good working conditions for the job they do, no other unskilled jobs get the ammount of money per hour they do and finishing times ect.

They should deal with it, all unskilled jobs take the piss, they should try working at asda even with the modernisation they still have it easy (lol unless they lose there job :/).

not to mention i hate my mail man no matter how many times i tell him he will not ring my door bell to give me parcels i dont think he even knocks, i swear ive been sat in the back room come to the door and there has been a slip left, annoys the life out of me.

THE STRIKES ARENT ABOUT PAY

why do people keep going on about them getting enough pay when the strikes arent even about pay

its about Royal Mail wanting to automate sorting processes hence a lot of people lose there jobs

if you were told that, then told to 'deal with it' would that stop you striking? i doubt it

Like i said before i think automation is a musst for Royal Mail to keep up with competition, but if you look at it from there point of view, if striking may mean you keep your job they will do it, they have nothing to lose
