The side windows were done to the limit, i mean when looking in your blind spot and out the rear window in the dark.

Tbh I think they were being "nice" and asking you to put it right, so they wouldn't have to deal with you in more forceful ways...

i.e. saves them the paperwork and you the hassle of having to comply/getting fined

I would do it because if (more like when) they see you again they are not going to be best pleased
