Um... what's a mushroom filter? Sorry not being sarcastic just intrigued!
The guy I'm seeing at the moment has had a bout three scooby's- his most recent one is a 2004/5 one (with the bug eye'd headlights). Used to own one of the older shapes previously though. Say's they're great fun to drive and reliable as long as you look after them ie: use the correct petrol (think the newer ones are octane 97+ petrol??) and get them serviced when they're supposed to be done- not sure off the top of my head how often this is though. And by a subaru garage (but then he would say this as he's an ex mechanic for subaru and mitsubishi ) Also parts are quite expensive so that is something to consider esp regarding things like pads, disk, cluthces. He also said about the petrol consumption, but he uses his quite a lot for work etc and luckily he's on a decent wage so that's not too much of a problem for him. So seeing you use a van for work the petrol etc side of things should be ok ish... Also your brother would probably be able to tell you if it's uk spec or not? Hope you find some of that useful...

Why not just buy a Saxo thats slammed on its arse, rolling on 19s with a mad bodykit and loud install.A Scooby has the same image as 1 of those and attracts all the boy racers now.and ul save urself quite a bit on insurance.
I wouldnt have 1 anyway.

We had the nuts STi TypeR 'better than a P1' and had no real issues on reliabilty. Just consumables really

how long did it take you to think of that line...
As AK say it's mainly consumables on the subaru's. As long as you look after them they'll look after you.

When the AA were called out to my last scooby (none engine related - ignition barrel), the guy who came was in his 40's and had been working for the AA for 10yrs and said it was the first one he'd ever been called out to.

I don't care, they're fuckin ace cars. The classics and newage are quite different tho, the rawness of my classic and the grunt it made was ace. Stunk of petrol if you were behind tho

The common as muck comments wind me up now.
you PERCIEVE that they are common because they stand out and you take note of them.
How many Focus, astra's etc are on the road or minis ffs.

I don't think the STi is all that common, whenever I see them out and about they are usually just the WRX versions.
It's a fast car for not a great deal of money. I paid £4500 for a car that as standard does 0-60 in 4.6s and sounds lovely

Poor modifications gave the Subaru pistons this reputation......heavy detonation will kill any piston, no matter how strong it is! Its pretty much always down to poor cooling and/or incorrect fuelling as well and its always piston three that lets go - Its the piston right next to the turbo so it tends to be hotter and its the last piston to be fed with fuel so sometimes doesnt get as much as the rest.
