I know what you mean about comet. I did a 6 month stint over last christmas there (still at uni) and they stopped doing commission about 2 years ago.
Its all about selling essentials with each item.
For exam a HD tv. Sell a digibox, cables, wall bracket etc etc
And even then you only made such a low % and it was based overal on what the rest of the sales staff did. Such a farce but it was beer money.

Rob, there's a dealer near us(about 40/50 miles) giving another £628 off the cars with £2k off already. IF they hit maximum bonus etc. the MOST they could make would be £145, is it really worth all the hassle and running around to make £145, that'd be £14.50 for me, for what is effectively 4 - 6 hours work, bollocks to that.

I just didnt get what you meant Jamie - (ive had some beers - watch out j18).
Add ons is where the money is, with an Ibiza I(for me personally) can make more money out of finance and a couple of add ons than the car itself, there really is no money in new cars. I think people have been mis-educated my media. I'd much rather sell a used car, double the profit in them sometimes!

The first thing my dads boss said to my nan when she went to pick him up after his first days work as a salesman was 'Mrs Austin, in the motor trade, the customer is never right'.
and imo, he's not wrong. I get people try to tell me how my job works, sorry, how many cars will they buy this year? one? two maybe? and I'll sell how many? one hundred and how many? who more likely to know whats going on, people need re-educating.
I refuse people test drives on used cars if they dont like the colour of the one i have or its £1500 too expensive etc. and wont buy it beacuse of it. They get all arsey about it despite the fact theyre not going to buy it but just wanted to drive it. I dont see the problem, if their car was advertised in autotrader privately, I went to their house to see it and said 'its more than I want to spend, but can I drive it anyway?', then find someone elses cheaper and buy that, would they let me drive it? I dont think so!

The problem is though is that, even with franchised dealers, some of the crap that comes out of the salesmans mouth is pure drivel at times.
for example, the number of dealers who instantly dismiss any price you've got off the internet as "Yeah there not legit cars, and they won't be UK cars, so it's not a true comparison" is shocking. when my dad was looking for his car, very few dealers were honest and just said "yeah we can't match that price". Its for that kind of reason that you get people who don't trust the "thats the lowest we can go" line off the salesman.

If you buy off the net, are you going to get to drive it before you buy it though? For £145 profit, I wouldnt match a price off the internet, would you work for sub £4 per hour?

Most of them work on a broker basis who simply put you in contact with a large dealer network. When I enquired it wasn't a problem for me to test drive a car if i was interested in buying one.
Like I stated it's not the fact I'd expect them to match it, it's the seeming ignorance that dealers have used against a genuine price, that they try and dismiss in order to get you to pay a hefty sum more for. If they turn round and say "we can't do that price, but we can do it for £X" and then discount the car to a more acceptable (for them) level then fair enough, but to try and effectively call you a liar and then give little to no discount on a car thats substantially cheaper elsewhere isn't doing anyone any favours! .

Best evidance of salesman ignorance I can think of is when Jade was looking to buy her current mini, went to view a couple, narrowed it down to 2 cars approached one place & said right were looing to buy now, but theres another very similar , same year, colour infact its got less miles & a bit cheaper, but she likes this one a bit more so if you match the price of the other place & MOT it we'll do a deal.
Got a load of pish spouted & told we were 'at it: Ok pal your loss, I went in the following week with the purchased car to show the pleb he'd just lost a sale!!

My dad got £2k off his Audi - got prices from online brokers, to which most dealers gave the "not a uk car" bollocks responce too, until he visited the one dealer who said "we can't beat £x because we have higher overheads, but we can do it you for £y". The salesman they got though was really good, and actually commented that very few people ask for a discount on cars because, like that chap said alot of them sell themselves and because they're a premium brand with a premium price, people presume dealers won't discount them to boost sales.

That's especially funny when both cars are on autotrader and you know for a fact that they'll know what else is available in the local area and what they're competing against!
End of the day, no matter how you look at it, A salesmans job is to take as much money off you as possible. for this reason alone, I become the worlds biggest sceptic whenever there mouth moves .

im not getting into it, but as salespeople, someone else will buy the car if you dont, possibly for more money. its a risk we take!
if you buy a car off the net, where are you going to take it when it breaks down? if it doesnt come from your local dealer, why are they going to help you when you have a problem? its not the law, they dont have to, its their garage, they can decided what to do with it!! you wouldnt buy a sony tele from comet and take it back to argos when it breaks, would you?

Yeah my old man got a good deal on an A4, blokey downstairs sold him it, he went to BMW over the road pre ordering as he liked the new 3 series too, Told the salesman he was ready to buy & deciding between a A4 2.0 tdi avant & 320d 2.0 Touring. but the bmw was x amount more expensive but offered none/little over the A4 to compensate the extra - what could he do on the price?. Salesman told him under no uncertain circumstances BMW do not discount cars!!

Calm down, your not trying to sell me a car
I suggest you look up the word "Franchise" to see what that entails, and also understand that most garages aren't gonna turn down warrantee work knowing that they'll get payed by the manufacturer, whether you bought the car from them or not.
As for your last comment, it's a manufacturers warrantee, so you buy your car from a lisenced outlet (a dealer) and have repair work done at a lisenced repair centre (also a dealer). theres no stipulation that they have to be the same place in the contract you agree too - the same contract that ensures your car is repaired by any franchise.

Even funnier thing is the car was still parked up on the fourcourt 2 months after....................it was £1500 over book price!! Salesmug said 'Minis are really holding their value mate' Aye thats true but not that much!! The guy was a total fanny, honest ive told loads of folk what happened - dont think they will sell many cars unless they buck up their ideas!!

Just thinking, how can garages make so little on the sales of new cars while they are so expensive compaired to the rest of europe!?
I know overheads are going to get mentioned, maybe increased transport costs, but its not like a couple hundred quid, some folk can save like £0000's importing a car from Europe, even after all associated costs are taken into account!! Ok warrenty is an issue but for the sake of saving thousands its a good gamble. Some warrentys arnt worth the paper they get written on.
