Exactly the reason Swindon used (and now triple 888) a reverse head on the XE Touring Cars. Stopped the exhaust heat flowing up and increasing the inlet temps, and also created a Ram effect for the TB. It was more for heat reducing though.

think youll find it was more for the exhaust having a better route, therfore making more power, if it was for heat reasons, it would have been easier and cheaper to wack a vent in the bonnet and make a sealed air box like andy had.....

It was a load of factors, as you say, easier exhaust design with less curves (front manifold has to sweep back on itself) and a free-er flowing design. Like with all motorsport, a few small changes here and there equal up to a few tenths on teh track.

The throttle bodies had their own airbox as well (see previous picture).

it was only for exhaust flow reasons, added 4bhp apprently through the rev range
