Unless it was something outwith your control, not including you spending money you don't have, they should be able to charge you whatever they want tbh.

its simple, dont bounce cheques, or miss direct debits and you are fine.
Im with the banks on this one, if you fuck up its your fault. you are told of the charges before you sign for your bank account!
sometimes. say you go overdrawn by 36p and they charge you £30 for doing it, thats stupid and they should maybe just pay the small amount but other cases are simple, if you are trying to reclaim £1000's in charges you must be a completely shit customer or useless with money

but the thing is. the £30 they charge is an admin fee. it doesnt cost £30's worth of admin time so why should it be charged as such. which is why now most if not all banks have changed the charge to about £12

because life is always that simple, yes.
abnk accounts are not a luxury these days they are more of a neccesity, i agree charge people for going overdrawn, but don't rip their eyeballs out thats just wrong.
When i went into mine it was because the dentist i set up a DD with didn't tell me they would randomly take two direct debits out at the same time, this put me in my overdraft and meant the new direct debit from a different company was coming out of a minus balance. This cost me 80 pound in fines, do you not think that is a joke? they gave me it back as it was the first time, but thats not the point. If it was 8 pound i probably wouldn't even have complained and sorted it out myself, but 80 quid, come on thats fucking rediculous.

Ok fair enough, but I've taken it up with the dentist not the bank - they should have told you and because of their fault it cost you money...was nothing to do with the bank really....
Suppose its more the people claiming back thousands, thats just careless IMO.

so what if it costs even £5 out of the £30 charge, its their option what they charge and you agree to it when you sign for the account. same as when we get customers that book their cars in for a custom exhaust but dont show up, they lose their £40 deposit. it dosnt cost us £40 but its a complete pain in the arse when it happens, hence the charge

if they did take two DD payments without telling you then you have a right to claim any costs back as part of the DD guarantee that you are covered by. chance is its in the smallprint somewhere on the document you signed.

its a question of being ethcal though why do banks who make 40 billion profit a year charge such high ammounts, i got charged £30 for going less than a pound negative in my current account, despite having a savings account with thousands in (which they use to invest and make money) is that ethical, no.
Do mobile phone companies charge you £30 when you dont pay your phone bill on time, no, do energy companies ect ect.

The customer would expect that deposit to be lost, if you turned around and said its 200 quid you are taking off them, and the job was only going to be 50 quid anyway would that be justified?! errrr no.
they told me about a double dd but said it would be first payment, not 3 months into it, i thought it had been and gone.

Banks are bollocks IMO. I'd be a lot happier being paid in cash and sticking it under my matress.

if you cant control a bank account, dont have one. in the case with the dentist then theres a different situation but the people that clock up £1000's in fines deserve it.

i agree something has gone wrong if they clock up 1000's of fines, but then there is a case if these fines have been clocked up because of the charges. ie got charged 50 quid, not been able to cover the charge and it's snowballed, thats not right.
