When I was 16:

Then when I was 17, passed my full licence and got this VFR400 NC30:

With my mates VFR400

This was a regular occurence, VFR's getting fixed. That's my mates one we were repairing, mine is on the left.

Then tragedy struck:

Decided I'd had too much bad luck with it, so that was that, started stripping it down the next day:

Then borrowed my mates NC30 that he just used for commuting (He has a broken arm at the moment so can't ride)

And was riding that up until I got my corsa

I'm gonna do my test soon too...
Is it any easier doing a restricted test than a direct access?
I was gonna do restricted (even though I'm 22) and then get a 400 VFR or Kawasaki ZX-4R. Both about 65 ish bhp (illegal on restricted license, but not if I claim it's restricted)... Then after 2 years buy something bigger.
Thing is, It's pointless passing your test and jumping on a R6 or 1000 (or anything over 100 bhp and fairly heavy).
You blatently won't learn how to ride and will just blast things down the straights all the time, then go really slow round the bends (though you'll obviously think your flying, and when you get back to the straight you'll blast off).
That's why I think if I got a Kawasaki ZX-4R which I'd ride like a demon in the twisties, it'd help me get used to just riding fast in general, before getting something with 100 bhp +.
Even on my Aprilia RS, with it's whopping 34 bhp, I can keep up with a lot of bigger bikes in the twisties, just due to the fact it weighs nothing and can be thrown into any bend, cranked over and come out no problem. Problem is top speed is about 110 mph (downhill).
Ultimately I want a R6, (hence my r6 pearl paint on my bike lol!) and if I did direct access, I'd possibly get a 400cc (just so I didn't kill myself) then sell it and get a r6! Definately. but an older 1999 one.
So anyway, question is - is Direct Access any harder really than restricted license?
I can ride no problem, good bike control - but just need to freshen up on the life savers, mirrors, manouvers etc.

I'd love one but they are death traps on the public roads, so going to stick with 4 wheels for that very reason.

fair enough a 400 can be fun through bends but R6's are too. As you say the speed is there for the straights but i know which i'd rather have

Yeh but what I'm saying steve is, if you've just passed your test, you'll probably learn more going on a smaller lighter bike with less power, than a heavier bike with a lot of power first.
Obviously we'd all prefere the r6. but I could imagine someone going straight onto a r6, not really learning how to corner properly / carry speed etc, as its' less important when they can just blast everything down the straight anyway.

Here are pics of bikes I've had....
This in my old VFR 400 NC-30 which i used to race in the formula 400 class. This was the last bike i raced before getting a mortgage

Then i decided to build a streetfighter over the winter months out of a Suzuki Bandit 600. A great first road bike, but i always wanted more after being used to racing.....

........thats why i went out and bought a brand spanking new one of these.....

.....a 2007 Yamaha R6 (in black with silver) which is absolutely f*cking awesome!! Just wish they were around when i was racing!!
