what about the squat?

Apparently it uses more muscles than the squat.
Do both and you can't lose.

they are the best you can do...Squat would be the pushing mechanism while dealifts is pulling.
Belts are a must when doing these exercises to prevent back injury but form also is very important.

I was doing deadlifts, what I thought was correct, and turned out it was all wrong!
A fitness instructor showed me and once you get used to it easy (Im not a poser but mirrors help to see you are doing it right) but its same story I guess you do it right (throught technique) or you throw on an extra 10kg and do it wrong and risk doing in your back.

I did a routine that was Deadlifts, Squats and Bench for about 9 weeks.
When i finished, my 1 rep deadlift record was 152kg and 1 rep squat was 160kg and was benching 2x40kg dumbbells.
By far the best workout id done as its massive compound movements,
at the time is was 88kg @ 5ft 11.
To be physically strong and rounded the guide line is, bench your bodyweight, deadlift twice your bodyweight, squat 1.5 times your bodyweight and shoulder press 75% of your bodyweight.

sumo deadlifts are good mate. As long as you're still maintaining a bend in your knee and you're looking forward then you should be fine. Just keep using those mirrors to check your form!

12 reps is alot for deadlifts imo. It's the one exercise where i wouldn't advise anymore than 6-8 reps.

At 80kg I was deadlifting 140Kg a little while ago - but Ive not deadlifted for ages now
Had one guy in the gym deadlifting 220kg and I think upto 250/260Kg - he screwed his lower back up good and told everyone else not to bother with it.
When it goes wrong it goes very wrong....
