I got the car for £4500 so i've paid 2/3 the value of the car on a new engine .... better not get nicked now

No it's not. They are complicated engines, they need a lot of new parts and the labour for such a job is massive. It's a lot of money, but not a lot of money for the job.

Had it of been a WRX rebuild i'm sure it would have been cheaper. As a guide STi engines go for nearly double that of WRX engines on ebay.
I looked at one STi engine on there and was Buy It Now for £1850. Price of my rebuild before VAT £1800. If I was a competant mechanic then I would have saved a shed load on labour and I also had a new clutch stuck in as my old one was knackered.
