and do the same for insurance as when i passed age 21, they wanted £2000 plus some places to insure my 06 plate ninja 636! got it down to £610 fc which is good really as a first time rider!

I did my das last year and it cost me about £450 - £500

And it was well worth it

The cost of a motorbike is so little for the performance you get. There is no way you can get a car that does 0-60 is less than 5 seconds for £1500

This is true

I'm trying to convince my mate that a 400 is a bit for a first bike, with no experience of riding bikes on the road

He's not listening though, he definitely wants a 400

I quite like the 400 sports bikes they handle really good and acceration is good as well. I reckon for a first bike it would be pretty good, then again it might be safer getting a 125cc for a year or so. Depends how sensible the bloke is

That's what I'd do if it was me, 125 or maybe a 250, then the VFR after getting used to riding on the road, but it's not me and he won't listen

Most are sheds and poorly looked after.

Nice RS250 would be good, but again finding a mint, wel cared for example is not easy

i nearly pissed myself at this most 250 strokers are sheds and poorly looked after, if hes looking for a mint rs250 hes up at the 1.5- 2grand+ mark and still no guarentee the engine will be a goodun.. at least with an older rgv/kr1s hes gonna have money sitting to fix it when it goes wrong

I have an RGV 250 in the garage - used it fro trackdays - it has NO go until about 13k rpm then its a rocket till about 15k lol.
better off with a 400 or if hes a big lad a 600... he can always get it restricted to 33hp then that way he'll get used to the weight etc.

400cc is what people should be going for as a first bike over a 600 imo...

A 400cc or a tamed 600/650 like a Hornet, SV650, Bandit, Thundercat etc.

Sports 600cc bikes for new riders, might as well give the keys to a 911 Turbo to a 17 year old...
