out of the 2 the 172 easily, better seats, faster, better handling, better looks, much more fun to drive, basically its the better car.
the 206 gti is the only pug gti i felt didnt deserve the badge, everything about just seemed abit of a let down to me and my mind was made up when it couldnt pull away from my old astra 1.8 sri
i klnow you said no other car suggestions but have you considered a 306 gti-6 or rallye? both within your budget and both better than the 206

always fancied a hot 306, used to love the S16`s but dont like the styling of the 306 anymore even the phase 3 models looks to dated.

My mate had a 172 and it was surprisingly quick. They just keep pulling and pulling. I was really impressed with it. Never been in the GTi so can't make an unbiased comment really. But as you've said, everything looks to be in the clio's favour with performance, handling etc. Go for the clio

gotta be a 172. i would of loved a 182 but just way out of my price range, between the 206 and 172 there isn't much comparison, the 172 wins hands down, performance, handling, no difference in space, and there probably isn't much in it in terms of running costs.

Common fault on the 172 is the exhaust cracking away at the centre section. Renault want over £600 for a replacement. After market is half the price. My mate got one thats designed to sit behind the bumper so still looks standard. The trim can crack/break too!! On his the gear lever surround broke! Seats in the Cup like my mates don't have the half alcantara seats like the regular car. No ABS or xenons either.

That looks really nice! The Clio 172 seems to have more votes than the 206 GTI.

were you looking at the older 172 or the newer shape?? I've heard the driving position of the older one is awful.
