No. There has been debates going on about this in BMW Car Magazine. Basically the diesels are good and 'more powerful' with torque and what they were marketed for, motorway miles. The diesels basically pull extremely well etc when cruising at 70mph and wanting to go quicker.

the new 335C Twin Turbo is a 3litre?

yep.

They call it the 335, so that it's not confused with the 330 (non turbo)

Yes, just like the E46 316i and 318i have exactly the same engines, a 1.8. The different figures represent BHP. Exactly the same theory as the Mini One and Cooper - get the One remapped and it's as fast as a Cooper, except you lose your warranty.

Dunno, I presume BMW like the simplicity of numbers, over a long string of letters

Yeah the fact they developed the 2002 and developed the engine from this car to dominate F1 with turbo technology that was beyound anyones imagination at the time.

BWN were playing with turbos before time

The numbers haven't matched capacity for years. 318 is a 1.9, 320 is a 2.2, 323 is 2.5 etc.

Just to confuse you even more:
There was talk of the M3 becoming a 4 door saloon (so a baby M5) and a coupe version of the M3 being called the M4. This is going on the principle of odd even numbers, as the 6 series/M6 is basically a coupe 5.

yeah it was develpoed for BMW homolgation purposes but due to the car not meeting the regulations at the time it could never compete with it, so they put them out as road cars. Very very rare and were demmed the first relibale usable Supercar and are still very good by todays standards.

Yes. It was a luxury cruiser, not a "sports" car
