the plain 'number plates' aren't number plates. they can't be sold as plates, they're sold as signs, as they legally need to have a bsau mark and a postcode on to pass an MOT.

also, with the V5 present, you can't buy illegal plates.

I could get a set of 'signs' made for £20, or plain, standard plates for £15, with the bsau + postcode.

They would pass an MOT but are illegal in the eyes of the law.. Very grey area... but you can have any colour, font etc as long as it is legible to pass an mot...

well, the place I went to earlier, have a rack of different sized acrylic rectangles, for bike plates...

just ask for 'the next size down' for the front one.

Could you get plain smoked signs made with normal DVLA fonts?

I've found this site through a VAG forum that does smoked show signs, but they don't have the proper DVLA fonts.

I've got a normal sized plate and I just cut it down to fit round my 5 character plate, which also luckily removes the other rubbish thats on the corners.

I got new ones today, they're plain, but with a tiny postcode and BSAU mark, just to be safe.
