My mum is eligible for Motability cars. We came off the scheme though due to the nitpicking and hidden costs, you lived in constant fear of any little supermarket knocks or dings for example, we were even blamed for the faulty paintwork on our old Scenic wheeltrims which flaked off a few months after we got the car.
More hassle than it's worth IMO, nothing but trouble for us.

Do they take the car off you or make you pay if it gets a scratch or it gets a dint?

If they believe it's being abused they'll take it off you. If it has any damage you'll be charged for the repairs.
They check the car for such damage at service intervals, we had one occasion when it had been given to a newbie mechanic and he had listed EVERY single fault (mostly stone chips etc) as serious damage. We had no end of trouble proving otherwise.
...and, as my dad just reminded me, you will lose (or fail to accumulate) any NCB, which will hinder you if you decide to come off the scheme later.
To sum up, I'd avoid it at all costs although it might seem a cheap way to get a car. It's not worth the stress and hidden costs.
Just go about getting a car the same way most of the peopleon here do (I don't mean go out and nick one...).
Hope that helps you decide.
Ash.

Oh, almost forgot to mention the stringent checks that you're not exceeding 12k a year, and the rather hefty payments you have to make for any mileage over that.
