First thing they need to do is put the resources from this into putting more police on the road to get rid of all the morons that drive uninsured, on the phone, drunk etc This will be the most effective way to cut accidents.

Speed does kill but i feel it is not the main cause in most accidents. All this law will do is slow people down and cause more jams and anger.

My take on the speed and the way they monitor it is as follows,

Who is more likly to have an accident because of a pedestrian steping into the road

On a 30 limit road
Person A who is driving not paying too much attention to the speedo at 35-40 MPH but paying 95% of thier attention to the road and its surrounds,

Person B who is driving at 30 MPH and checking his speedo constantly because cops will stop him for speeding at say 33MPH therefore only paying about 50% attention to the road!

IMO Speed Kills yes... but lack of attention kills more

Reducing the speed limit will increase the number of deaths caused by speeding.

people killed at 50mph would be another statistic, and the percentage would go up, making it look worse.

couldn't agree more....and lets be honest its not going to work. we the "new" generation of drivers (ie those driving 5yrs or less) know we can do 70+ on Mway (how many can say they dont stray over 70? i know i can't!) so all of a sudden we've got to belive doing 50mph is now safe and anything above this is "reckless"???

utter madness, just wont work.

I usually do Hereford to Aberystwyth, 78 miles in about 1hr 20 which is an average speed 60mph, and thats on mountain roads too

3am, I would rather drive at 120mph and arrive alive after an hour and go to bed than fall asleep at the wheel half way with the cruise control on at 43

If they're after saving money do some proper work of sorting out this countries real issues instead of attempting to make a name coming out with such claptrap.

I travelled at 150mph on a German autobahn and arrived safe and in good time.

I drove across Barcelona and arrived without any road rage, aggression or near misses.

Both systems REQUIRE drivers to pay attention.

Traffic calming on side streets, traffic lights on every junction and nanny speed limits have turned British drivers in to stupid morons. And we wonder why there are problems.

There always have been Steve, not much is de-restricted.

This woman clearly didn't consider the cost of converting every car in the UK to read KPH on the big numbers on the speedometer.

Imagine them analysing the data

Hmm, his car hasn't moved, except once this week when it lifted up into the air about 6ft, rolled onto its side and then landed again...

But his bin has been doing 90mph up and down the M6 every day
