but it still sold for well over the odds.
someone wanted it specifically, so they bought it. it wasnt worth 90,000, but it sold for that. its the same.

Mod's add value if the buyer is willing to pay the extra for them, simple as. Generally people won't pay the extra for the mods because there not to their exact liking, but occasionally you will find the right buyer who will pay some part towards re-cooperating the cost of the mods.
Usually however, the more mods, the less likely you are to find the "right" buyer.
As an example I know personally if there were two identical cars, but one had a nicer set of aftermarket wheels, depending on the value of the standard wheels, and what it'd cost to change from the standard ones, i'd be tempted to pay a little extra for the one with better wheels.
Personally for ease of sale, the mod's i've done to my car are all reversable, and i still have all the standard parts. When i come to sell, it'll go back to standard, and i'll sell the bits off seperatly.

As said a car is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it...
Some ppl will pay extra as it's modded, some ppl would want to pay less...
All my cars i've sold have been sold for above book price and ALL modded...

Exactly. At the end of the day there are that many cars on the market, you will only get what people are willing to pay.
I know when i sell mine, it'll look completely standard because you are limiting the market that the car appeals to if you leave it modified. I think i'll make more money selling it all seperately anyway, but even then i'll loose a fair chunk of money, but thats what you have to realise when you modify a car.
