Adam, if you're talking about the Kent engine, i'd reconsider the 'heap of crap' thing.
The crossflow is one of the most popular and tuneable engines ever constructed.
Years ago, a friend of mine had an HT Racing built, all steel 1700 Kent on 48s. It made just shy of 200 horsepower at nearly 10,000 rpm and sounded like a motorbike engine.
Such a compact and light power unit too.
