Its when the air builds up on the edges of wings and on the nosecone.
The plane then splits it's way through, this is the boom.
(Think thats right)
Best explanation so far OJC you just explained the speed of sound, not ta sonic boom, but thanks for trying.
a sonic boom is created by breaking the sound barrier.

No. The 3 rocket boosters are fuelled from the large orange tank that you see during take-off too, it has no fuel onboard, bar for electrical systems and menouvring thrusters. It can however glide rather well, and can detach from the SCA (Shuttle Carrier Aircraft) aka, retro-fitted NASA 747-100 and glide to the landing site. it is incapable of powered flight without the fuel tank strapped under it.

a sonic boom is simply the hearing part of breaking the sound barrier. As an object moves through the air, it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it.These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the aircraft increases the waves are forced together or 'compressed' because they cannot "get out of the way" of each other, eventually merging into a single shock wave at the speed of sound. This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 761 mph at sea level.

Luigi, mach 2 is merely a way point for twice the speed of sound. once the sound barrier has been broken, its smooth buffet-free flying regardless of speed. the STS is capable of mach27

Thats only with the fuel tanks attached and in vertical flight though Jambo, so the space shuttle is just a frigging modified V2 rocket with wings.

Does it being verticval affect it then? I.e is it faster?
Whats the diameter fo the equator?
V2's were far beyong their time

its the quickest route to space jambo, and its not vertical at all. the STS will perform a roll onto its back during ascent into orbit, with the shuttle underneath the tank.

Dave, i thought ollie meant it wouldnt go that fast at sea level, due to the air's density or some shit.
I wanna see a space shuttle launch before i die
