I wouldn't usual go for a white shirt unless it was for a funeral or a black tie event.

Try The Saville Row Company for some really nice shirts, I get most of mine there and they're fantastic quality

White can look ok depending on the colour of tie and occasion.

I wouldn't wear plain red or blue tho very light cheque always looks good
