adam if you want a good turbo thats been looked after go for about 5-7 grand ,, cheaper ones on ebay taking a gamble say around 3 thou + ,, iv seen a low milage 18k pristine condition one go for 18 grand

bad condition S2 say 3thou + upwards to 10K for a good convertable

theres even a S1 2.7 like mine for sale the now for 9 grand but its from a dealer and only has 40 thou miles,, mines was only 4300 saying that its done 170thou miles but mines had a 2 grand gearbox rebuild a year before i bought it

you could get an early 8v head 2.5 for a couple of grand and not need to worry about it going bang

Ive lusted after 914's ever since I can remember.

Dunno why. Whether its because its a porker (or nearer a VW tbh) or just because they are so 'different'

Running costs on 911's plain put me off tbh. My old man had a '96 (996?) 911 targa and the clutch cost was circa £4K IIRC after 35k miles

I wont be going there in a hurry

I posted 912, Jules S posted 914

I love 911's don't getme wrong, but 912's are less 'common', given a choice I'd have any kind of 911 over pretty much anything, but I'd also not say no to a 912 and I'd cream myself over a 356 Speedster!

ahh bloody similar names

this is something iv never really understood though about 912 lovers- the 912 and 911 of the same year shared chassis, bodyshell suspension and brakes in fact pretty much everything except that the 912 used the old 356 engine but slightly tuned and was a couple of grand cheaper than the 911 which used a more powerful 6 cylinder powerplant

356 's are gorgeous cars

They are also very slow, horrible to drive, and have an exhaust note that sounds like a tambourine with a hole in it.

924 has a vag engine, and the 944 engine is one bank of a 928 vee unit with balance shafts incorporated. Hence such huge capacities for a 4 cylinder engine.

And James, the 928 is not old.

Dunno Jimbo. I always thought it was a Porsche idea from the ground up. I thought they just out sourced a cheaper power unit from elsewhere to keep project costs down.

i thought it was a VAG project, and they asked porsche to develop it, then VW got scared, and dumped it so porsche bought the whole project for 1 million, despite it costing VAG 10 times that
