ps - my dad has a 2.2 signum derv which returns an average indicated 49.2mpg, he does a lot of miles for work, and would save money in the long run, but you would need to be doing 8k a year minimum in it to save a noticable difference i would say

I have a corsa 1.5d fuel econmy is spot on just done 510 miles with 42 litres 56mpg!!
Its not quick it dont look good but its so cheap to run!!

i would try going for a td slightly less economical then n/a diesel's but slightly more liveable

306 TD 55miles to the gallon and they dont look too bad, plus the mechanical ones can be tweeked to 110BHP and 160ftlb+ for free and they still remain econimical.
I have one its bomb proof, stay away from the DHY engined ones built in 1997 as they were fitted with N/A con rods were never recalled and will spontaneously throw a rod. Only thing ya gotta do on them is change the oil every 6000. I pay £320 Fully Comp and thats with protected no clams legal cover all the extras!!! CHeap as chips

turbo makes engine work more efficient
we had a rover 420sldi with intercooler and turbo, did better mpg then the none turbo one

Well I say it depends on how you drive a diesel with a turbo. My 1.5td does very good mpg if you don't drive it hard and constantly with the turbo spooling.
