All RS Turbos were 1.6 litre and FWD Bri.

Gartrac developed a RWD version of the FWD Escort shell in the 1980's for Rallycross, and also bespoke conversions for wealthy private customers.

The red MK IV Escort in the ebay auction referred to at the start of the thread is one such car.

It was called the G6 because Gartrac built them with the Cologne Ford V6 unit installed (invariably turbocharged).

The one up for auction has had a Cosworth Sierra YBD engine installed in it's place by a subsequent owner, so technically isn't a proper G6 anymore as the name referred to the number of cylinders.

It's still a fantastic car though, but any similarities to a conventional MK IV Escort or RS Turbo are purely cosmetic and the two cars only share a similar silhouette.

The layout is unique to the Gartrac cars and is nothing like a FWD model. Gartrac built quite a few cars over a period of years using both MK III and MK IV shells and cosmetic details as a base, aswell as carrying out customer commissioned works on some complete cars also I believe.

Road cars are occasionally seen for sale and at shows or meets, and motorsport derivatives can still be seen running in competition occassionally at Rallycross meetings.

I have seen both MK III and IV shapes in road going and competition trim, so you may well have seen what appeared to be a Series 1 RS Turbo with a Cosworth engine, but it would not be original, and there is a 99% certainty that it would be a Gartrac car.

Hope that helped a bit Bri.

Bri, i'm shocked.

The 1700T is an amzing car.

Infinitely better than any RS Turbo ever built.

They were not a production car and only about 13 were ever built, and they were proper Ford Motorsport program stuff.

They all had BDAs, a few were 1.7 litre turbo and some were 2.3 litre N/A.

They had Hewland transaxles like F1 cars, that would have cost considerably more than Ford's most expensive production car at the time.

They cost a fortune to develop, and were killed off due to the arrival of the Audi Quattro, in favour of a new 4WD project (the RS200).

Most were (tragically) scrapped by Ford, but a few legendary cars remain. Their whereabouts are very sketchy and very little if anything is known of their numbers and locations.

If you could find one, and the owner was willing to sell it, you would have to pay at least 50K for it.

These weren't production cars Robin.

All they were was a standard RS Turbo with a (yank spec) tall block that gave them a larger capacity.

I believe they were either a dealer special or a customer factory order.

They weren't very good and not much to write home about.

A friend of mine worked at Bristol Street Motors during the period that these appeared.

He PDI'd a few along with both 2WD and 4WD Rouse Sapphires.

He loved the special Cosworths and said they were well worth the extra dough for the improvements, but said that the 1.9 litre RS Turbos only felt a little torquier and were not so keen to rev or as nice to drive.

This was a fact that became apparent on other aftermarket 1.9 litre versions such as the Power Engineering cars of the early 90's.

When my car was being developed, it had the advantage of a good mix of power and torque, plus enjoyable/usable rev range.

1.6 litre engines of all ilks seem to make for pleasant driving due to their square nature.

This is particularly evident in Ford's Crossflow and CVH units.

The 1.9 litre unit was, in respect of driving enjoyment , inferior, due to it's long stroke crank and less eager nature, attributable to this factor.

The modified 1.9 litre versions of the time made huge torque but negligable power increases and did not have the high revving capability, and were as a result very dull and quite unpleasant to drive in a spirited fashion.

A bit like a diesel realy.
