I think he was unaware that the double valve springs he had fitted needed replacing after just a few thousand miles so eventually they failed and dropped the valves. Shuch a shame totally not his fault, he just wasnt made aware of the service intervals of the springs.

Hi Guys - James has alerted me to this thread. Sorry I haven't been around much - it's that thing called life getting in the way

To answer some of the questions:

The car was reshelled after some twat in a Clio rear ended it. The cage is a Custom Cages shell in lightweight T45 steel and was installed by a firm called MLP in Carlisle who did the reshell for me. MLP used to build the Focus rally cars, so did a good job.

The airbox and air intake/faibreglass bonnet are indeed Pro-Tec jobbies - they run a rally Corsa and supplised and fitted the bits for me.

The engine is an X16XE running 296/296 cams. Rev limit was set to 9000rpm and engine made 214bhp at 8450rpm. However, what SBD didn't tell me was that their double valve springs should be replaced every 1500 miles or so .This is why the engine dropped a valve, which wrecked the head and destroyed a piston.

I'm just about to complete the rebuild - new desgn of Omega forged pistons and Swindon Racing cams and single valve springs. The Swindon engine design is based on the Group A rally 1600 engines, which revved to 8500rpm and produced 205bhp WITHOUT throttle bodies. Although it's a bit less revvy, it should be stronger and more robust. Swindon never had a single valve train problem in any of their 22 engines.

The finished car should be back on the road at the end of this month, then it just needs a bit of playing with the mapping.

Hope this helps - I'll have a good trawl of the recent posts here now and try to catch up with life on CorsaSport

Aye Aye chief!

Did you ever go ahead with the move back up north? Or are you still in Cumbria?

I had a reshell.... and having problems getting desired power out of my 2.1 I lost 15bhp fitting and mapping in a SBD TypeC manifold go figure
