Running your car on veg oil is simple, just put some in with a bit of methonol to aid combustion. But the problem is, Veg oil is a bit heavier than mineral diesel, so you will bugger your fuel pump up after a while, especially on cold starts. To overcome this youcould fit a start up tank for a dual fuel system.

Bio diesel is different. What you are doing is making the string of molecules that make up the veg oil shorter so that they are more diesel like. This is a chemical process involving ethenol... Basically, on average, after the start up costs of about £1500 you can be producing Biodiesel for about 54p/litre. You do this by getting chip oil from chippys, you need a licence to do this though.

Or you can use rape oil, ethanol and a large tank and filtration process
costs 5k to set up

and costs about 30p per litre to produce

But if you have the rape oil then its cheaper

Especially if you have the straw from the rapeseed because you can also have an electricity generator that powers the whole thing. I really have too much time on my hands, but I have figure out how to make a fair ammount of money.

How many litres is that? For a £120k investment for the machinary you can be making 3500 litres of Biodiesel per 24 hours. That should cost you about 20p-30p/litre to make all in all. Mineral diesel costs about 90p/litre. Hmmm. Oh, also, the price of oil isn't going down. If you set up enough companys making Biodiesel then the major oil companys will buy you out eventually as there is a need for this kind of thing in the void between mineral fuels and hydrogen fuels. Lots of money.

you had a dual fuel system running?

it looks fairly simple to do, only thing is did you notice a lack of power when flooring it (caused by the higher flash point)

The last time my dad had to buy red diesel 4 our farm, because we wanted less than a tanker full, it cost more than it did at the pumps once we got it, dispite it carrying (slightly) less VAT. wot a fcuking joke, i mean its hard enough 4 british farmers to make a living as it is.

rant over.

Why did you not just buy it from the pumps then?

r u serious? so we wud either have to make hundreds of trips to the pumps with tin cans or drive there in the tractors every time we needed some. To add to the problem the nearest pumps are 2 miles away, all car drivers hate tractors and most importantly why the hell shud farmers have to pay the same price as common folk.

They should pay less - the tax is designed to fund road usage. They spend most of the time in fields.

I know Ian, but if there was a cheaper way to get it I would have been doing it that way.
And the comment about paying less than common folk when he paid more wasn't the best one to make.

Driving to the pump is so massively impractical its not worth considering!

Plus not only would it take you hours to get there, you would be half an hour holding the hose!

I remember when we had our diesel tank on the farm. It had a little hose on it that you popped into the diesel tank on the tractor. Then you had to turn on the tap on the tank... Then you waited for the diesel to overflow out of the tank
