i could never really see it working thou, ebay has the online auction market pretty much all to them selves. For any site to gain a percentage of the market it would require massive investment. millions.

It does make money mate, nothing to retire on but does a little.

Massive investment helps yes BUT with time it can also get there from search engines, feeds & people talking etc etc

what's the point of selling for a measly 2k? What can he get with that? He's better of sitting on what he's got and waiting to see what 2006 has in store for the site.

You're right, it could never compete with ebay but like I said to him in a u2u, the sheer fact that people are interested and willing to offer 2k means that it must have some potential.

Yes, lol, we went through this shit a few weeks back and i ended up getting slated for saying that

The question is to sell or not. Not if he could possibly compete with the likes of ebay.

An offer from your dad to get you off the computer and stop wasting his time doesn't count Greg.

Everytime i'm out of work (which is at least once a year. Contractor ) I always sell all my possessions to get me by, then when I have a job again I go out and buy them all again, it's daft but I never learn.

The point is, don't sell just for the sake of money to get you by. Sell because it's the right price and you no longer have a need/use for the website and it's something you won't miss/regret.

I agree totally.
Whether he wants to compete with ebay or not thats what its always going to be.
And as pointed out by other people, its called uk flava, which to most people suggests some sort of uk garage music site.

I know the name doesnt work well BUT i have invested alot in this (business cards etc etc) and also would mean a MASSIVE change in alot of things within the site, not to mention the amount i have spent on search engine optimisation etc etc

Would all be a waste and rankings would be wasted.

the decsion to sell or not should be based on if greg thinks he can make this a success or not. this would mean getting more members to register and start selling on the site, members who probably currently use ebay.

OK then, he is competing with ebay now and someone has still offered £2k was it? If he develops the website more then it will be worth more, surely?

SO does this mean nobody should ever setup an auction website in the world ever again because ebay is there

Should microsoft not have bothered with the xbox because sony had already done the PS2?

Should SonyEricsson not have made phones because Nokia already owned the market? Personally I think SonyEricsson mobiles are much better these days.

if someone was to set up an auction site, they would have to match the investment ebay have put into it. Just like with all your other examples.
