Because then you can't be a cool cat and show off your flashy new stuff.
I buy what I can afford as well btw.

Can I just clarify I didn't go out "buying flashy stuff". When I went to uni, I had trouble with accommodation, and the only place I could get to stay at short notice was a private apartment complex. The rent from that used up most of my student loan, and I had to break into my overdraft to afford food and bills etc.
I had a job since the second year which provided enough for weekly spending, but didnt pay off my overdraft really. Then I started working 30 hours a week on top of studies to earn enough to pay off my overdraft - not wanting to leave uni with more debt than I could help.
So you see, I haven't been going out drinking and clubbing every night, it's just an unfortunate set of circumstances that led to me being in the red.
Appreciate your understanding. Thanks.

I find the moral highground a bit laughable when those same people are going to borrow money to buy a house but somehow that is OK.
I'm in debt for my flat which hopefully will appreciate and some cars and a bit of furniture which certainly won't.
Doesn't matter at the end of the day. Numbers on a bit of paper. You can't take it with you.

Note how Ben didn't answer my question. If I'd never gone to uni and rented a flat then I wouldn't have posted about this today. It amuses me when people make such sweeping statements as before.

The never get in debt people will just have to play about with thier 10 year old cars then for the rest of thier lives. I see no problem getting a car on finance or HP or buying new things on credit cards. The money is always going to be there to pay off these debts. The convenience of being about to buy something and be able to pay for it over a couple of months is worth it. It's just a case of not overdoing it.
At the moment for me the money isn't there so the credit card stays at home in the safe.

My comment wasn't aimed at anybody in particular btw, realised it could be taken that way.
I've just seen quite a lot of people that are in 10k+ debt and they have nothing to show except they once had a half decent car and they bought loads of clothes.

aint that 99% though?
they only get in debt in the first place because they cant afford it and want it .
whereas they dont own it , and they have a grabble on thier nackers by the loan company for the repayments .
some people are crazy
its worked well for me , id say i own a lot more than most people my age through hard work , i buy and sell a lot to get more money and everything i have bought i have payed outright

Guess what I'm saying is I've only owed money really for accommodation. Upgrading computer, gettin bits for car etc, I've only paid for when I've had the money to do so.
I know the point you're making Ben, I agree to a certain extent, I for one have never used, nor want to use my credit card, it's mors satisfying going out buying a set of alloys when you can think yeah, I've earned this rather than "my bank has actually paid for these".

left uni in may with minus 1400 quid, got a job the following monday (spent my last 100 quid on a suit for the interview) and worked 70+ hours a week to clear my overdraft and start saving up
sold my corsa for 3400, bought an astra 1.4 run about, laptop, new Pc, tv etc and have 13k in the bank saved up

Just one of those things. I've learned my lesson the hard way but it won't be forever. Ben fair play for not falling into the trap.

for material stuff fair enough, I thought you were just generalising about people who were in debt.
