I paid £1500 on a 1.4i Civic (2 yrs old) when I was 17. Fully comp with Liverpool Victoria.
That was 4 years ago now, but I would be suprised if you couldnt find somewhere for cheaper than you have already, as thats just ridiculous.
Oh...and dont go under your parents name. Start building up your no claims asap. I'll have four years in January and only just 21. Beable to get a decent engined car then without stupid insurance prices, and laughing at all those who were under their parents policy until they were 20+!

right so lets get this right im 20 now and still under my dads policy so let me do the math thing. here goes
17 would have cost about £1800 cheapest i could have had it on my own policy on a 1.2 corsa l reg, then 18 i got new corsa would have cost about the same not much off lets say £1500 , then 19 i had a 1.8 petrol t reg mondeo on my dads insurance , if i had this on my own policy i expect this to be quite expensive lets say £1000 if im lucky, probs would have been higher as it is group 11 insurance a lot higher than my corsa was, and 20 i now have a swift gti group 11 insurance quite a fast little hot hatch so lets say if i had this on my own policy it would have been what £800 if im lucky.
so if we add all that up it comes to £5100, now lets look at what i actually have done.
17 corsa for just under £300, 18 new corsa bout the same £300, 19 mondeo £620, swift gti at 20 £500 odd .
so if you add that up what i actually paid on my dads insurance it comes to £1720 which if you compare to what i could have spent about £5000 it works out quite well, now obviously i know i just assumed the figures for the insurance if i didnt go on my dads but i dont think it would have been to far out.
so if you want to laugh when your 20 plus with your car with a decent engine and you no claims bonus go ahead, but ill laugh now when i take into account the fact i have saved a lot of money over the years and have a fastish car already.
and if you dont take into account the fact i can get insurance on my own in the future cheap to begin with becasue of my age and also have the abily of having one or two years no claims bonus for being a named driver ( insureyourmotor.com offer this service, yes it works as my mam has done it when she came off my dads policy) i think i have made the right choice.
