I include myself in the workers section as I'm studying to get a job in a highly competitive industry, but one which is also very well paid, so it's odds on I'll be paying a large amount of tax when I've graduated and got a job. I'm not the only one looking forward to this...

In summary, rant all you want about the dossers, but save a thought for those of us who are landing ourselves in debt and using up 3,4,5 or more years to try and get a decent, worthwhile degree and make something of ourselves.

Thanks.

Agreed, especially as I am doing more or less the same course as you.

You don't get cheap bus fares, you get cheap train tickets, but only if you buy a young persons railcard, which is available to anyone under 25 I think anyway...

The only reason they won't be paying tax is because they don't earn enough. You have to earn (something like) over £7k a year or £900 a month before you pay tax, and if they are full time students they won't have time to work that many hours in a week.

I don't know the exact figures and rules, but I was taxed quite a bit for my job before I went to uni when I was working full time. I'm sure the rules are different for full time workers and part time workers too.... Somones gotta fund the 15 year old mothers though haven't they

No you don't. Everyone in the country has a tax free allowance -- look at your tax code. 419L is pretty common which means you get the first £4190 odd every year FREE OF TAX.

Student loans are a loan, so I don't see how the tax payers are paying for it (except maybe providing the buffer -- the loans are paid back with interest set at inflation)? Tuition fees are pretty high, and most the good unis pay for their own existence from research grants and industry sponsors.

Most the comments in this post are pretty ignorant so far.

PS: I didn't do media studies...

Try Google or something. You get £4890 odd tax free...

I pay over a grand a month in tax and NI, but I'm still not complaining about students, or all the benefits given out left, right and centre...

Oh ok, maybe it does annoy me slightly, but don't single out students...

I would'nt say 20k a year at 23 is minimum wage, along with the fact I left school with 4 D's two E's 1 F and 1 U in my GCSE's.

By the time you have left Uni I will be nearing 25-30k a year where as you will start at the very bottom on minimum wage

Seeing as the averge starting salery for graduate CAD designers is around £20k to £25k, I think I will be earning a little more than minimum wage.
