what good will that do? if nothing has been changed in BIOS, you are just complicating things by messing shit around in BIOS. LEAVE THE BIOS ALONE DAMNIT!

theres one load of wires , yellow, black and red, some connect to cd drive with one plug, sum connect to cd writer drive on another plug, and one to hard drive. cant see motherboard end of cables

im going to assume that your CD Writer is set as the master device. Try unplugging the wide IDE cable from the back of the other CD drive (while the PC is off). Report back if Windows then see's the remaining CD drive ok.....?

if both drives arent workin tho, does it matter which is set to master? and btw... they were both working fine then suddenly just stopped. so cd drive shud still b master

if they're both on the same IDE channel and one drive fails it may cause the other to function incorrectly.....this is why im trying to help you find out if one of the drives is faulty....

not the power cables no. Disconnect the writer first. Then see what happens.

IT WORKED CHUMP   !!! U FUCKIN LEGEND lol thanks alot mate, i disconnected cd writer and now the pc loads properly and cd drive reads cds !! so is cd writer just fucked n ready for changing?? i want to format my pc now tht the cd drive works, cud u giv me a step by step of how to do it properly seeing as youre a genius? lol

the only way to tell for sure is to plug the IDE cable back in to the CD writer and then disconnect the cable from the other CD drive. If you then get the problem as before I'd be confident that the CD Writer is toast....try doing that first....

er i could but its not a 5 minute job....do a search on google. There are loads of sites that walk u through.
its as easy as setting your BIOS to boot from CD as the first device. Insert Windows XP CD. THen follow the on screen instructions.....

its definitely the cd writer drive. thanks alot. ive formatted my pc b4, but i had to install win 98 then upgrade to xp, is tht supposed to happen?

is your XP disc an upgrade? i created a fresh partition with an XP Upgrade disc, so you shouldnt need 98, maybe apart from verifying
