I leave everything undone, but still in place, so only need a twiddle wiht fingers to get bolts off, that wat can't loose anything.

Still fecking hate collets though, ping *argh feck where's it gone* then getting the magnetic sond out and waving it on the floor till it picks it up

I alwyas loose the washers and nuts in the head, just tip it on it's side and they fall out

I've already done more than 16v heads than i want to recollect, 8v ones are much nicer as the head's are smaller and everythings on on a angle

Think he means on only 95k it's a bit of a waste of money.
You only ever loose the hone marks on higher rom motors, or right at the base of the stroke where the rod angle is the greatest.
Did you bother compression testing it?
Ane "rebuilding" requires all new bolts, gaskets and so on, so if you decide it's perfect and needs nothign will have cost a small fortunate anyway.
Oh and there's no gurantee you'll put it back together in a better than when it was pulled apart.(no offence intendedor aimed at you, but first time rebuild are a bit of a steep learning curve)

the bottom end scares me anyway.. i want to leave it alone.... top end will be entrusted to a local genius ... and only 95k ! how long do these suckers run for

The one in my (now my g/f's want it back) MK3 astra is not on 150k, has a slightly leaky ring on no.4 and odd wear in the bore, seems a clear case of friday afternoon machining, or possible monday.
But still putting out near std power.

They live forever provided
1)not ragged when cold
2)regular oil changes
3)regular maintaince check ups 3mths ish

they have been known to run to 250 happily.

I'll compare this to a 90k X20XEV with the same rev limit as a redtop, and the rings were worn and pistons wornout too by then.
Just dont' make them like they used to is toooo true.

could have just slapped a new belt and water pump on, give it a clean and forget about it.
It's cheaper to buy another one than it is ti rebuild one in the first place.
