i also thought the same, considering a decent scart will cost you 25 quid tops, svideo a tad more, component a little more again etc 
Although im guessing it was a price based on all of the cables, which would be right - ie: speaker cables, video leads, phonos, digital conenctions etc

I got stuff which was not thin wire shite but not over priced crap. so long as it's not the thin brown or black shite wire it's good. need to change the rears from the brown shite soon

It's worth investing in 'good' speaker cabling, but you'd do much better to invest money in other components of the system than waste it on unneccessarily pure interconnects/cabling.
Budget 10% of your total system for wiring as a rule...
