sounds to me like its dodgy memory, or the processor is over heating....
if it is the HD, then just pop it into a fully working system, dump a load of stuff to it (as much as you can) and do a scan disk etc That should report any errors with it.
Also remember to install drivers during the XP installation if its a SATA/Raid setup etc.
As for CDRW and DVD, only thing you can do is try different ones.
Also, XP 64 might not be a bad idea - ive heard of a few people have problems running the 32bit version, yet the 64bit version seems to run ok *so far*. Just make sure you download the 64bit mobo drivers etc

sorry didn't read all the replies.
Did you try moving the hard drive onto primary and the cd/dvd onto secondary?

i'd avoid SP2 to be honest, just do 1.
install your motherboard drivers first, and then your graphics drivers.
Then install directx 9.
I just thought of something else....
Does that motherboard come with an onboard graphics card? If so then you need to make sure you disable it from within the bios otherwise it'll conflict and cause errors with the one you installed.

disable it all mate, you might be having IRQ conflicts which could be throwing up these errors.
