mk1 golf gti convertible would be a safer bet

like-- roof down when its good weather (never then)
dislike-- leaking roof, tempremental engine, old cold heaters which dont demist windows , new rattle every day.
ins grp 12/13 i think
cost 2k g reg 120k miles
1.8 8v injection??
bhp---??????
0-60--- not that quick, bout the same as corsa sport 1.4 16v. seems to accelerate really well from about 50-90 though.
personally wouldnt buy another convertible unless was nearly new.

came back to my car once after really heavy rain to find my foot wells absolutely full of water, had to drive back home with wet feet, car working on 3 cylinders and steamed up windows

if you do decide to get 1 check it over rigourously, check for water marks on seats and check carpet for damp or mildew.
hope this help

Also take off the back seat (only held on by two screws) check for rust and watermarks underneath the seat bench

Check in the boot, under the flooring for rust problems - in general just check newhere where water could collect -check the seals around the windows on the hood; and the seals where the side windows go into the hood

Also recently found the source of Stubbsys fuelling problem - which we assumed was a knackered pump - was actuaaly attributable to too much sediment in the fuel tank - sucking up into the sender - its a hour long job to do - and the main part is emptying the fuel out the tank so u can get the hoover pipe in to suck all the shit out - a common fault with the mk1s I found out afterwards
