the roads are part of the bitmap, the junctions and hover over'y bits are dynamically generated vector stuff

although the roads are created from the vector junction points and then saved as a bmp, they just arent created on the fly, if you see what i mean

Indeed. Could perhaps anti-alias the lines a bit if you're doing them beforehand.

i did anti alias them originally but found they lost a wee bit of detail, and some roads got a tad lost in others

MAP V2 now implemented, featuring a new map, this map is far more accurate than the last, i have redone all the calculations of coordinates and it is now a lot better.
You can see the differences if you select tracks overlay or dragstrips overlay it shows the old map, this map was pulled around and altered by myself to fit in with the data, I have now made the data fit in with the correct proportions of the country

also added a username search

distances now done, if you have a location set hovering over other points tells you the distance fro myou location in miles and km.
going to copy CS a bit now and have distances in the for sale sections lol
please note you have to be logged in and have a location set for distances to show

Why would I want to do that when there is a perfectly good hack to use. Not only that but has some good features .
You can't be nice about anything can you Steven.

well i had the choice of programming my own or using google map api, if i couldnt have done my own i wouldnt have bothered tbph.
plus it means i can fully integrate it into my site, especially now i have the distance thing working, with online/offline status aswell.
I dont need the level of accuracy googlemaps give, the whole point of a member map in my eyes, is to give you an idea of any members in your area and provide some basic distance info, not find out specifically which road someone lives down.
It also looks more part of the site etc.
Not saying its completely useless, but just the typical thing that somone would do, throw an existing googlemap mod into the board.
IMO id rather make my own version then i can make it how i want
aside from all that I have learnt how to make a map, and learnt about mapping data, coordinate plotting and triangulation for the distances, so i have taken a lot more away from it all than just a member map

I suppose it's something I may probably have to consider in the future.
The one thing about the googlemaps is that they put quite a strain on the site, which is not so much a problem at the moment.
In all honesty though, you membermap does look quite nifty so well done

im in two minds about releasing it as a mod for PHPBB, just the membermap functionality bit, not including the poi overlays iv done.
Iv even gone to the extent of rewriting all the pages it includes in a neat way with decent comments etc, so its ready for release now
I know it would be fairly popular as iv seen people asking about it before, even someone offering to pay someone to do it lol.
my only concern would be then, potentially every tom dick and harry would have it, and would lose the fairly unique appeal it as at the mo

Can't you add some sort of backlink to the hack. As in when someone installs it, it adds a credited link back to your site.
It's quite common with vbulletin hacks.
That way it benefits you by adding to your incoming links.

And you have to supply the postcode data which I personally wouldn't do unless I was sure there was no licencing issue with it. Using it is one thing - it can be withdrawn if it comes to light that its actually owned by someone.
If you supplied it to somewhere and it was downloaded by so many hundred people though you would be up for some problems.

jst added vehicle tuners as an overlay, wouldnt have mentioned this but a lot of people ask where to go near to have remaps etc
http://www.vagweb.co.uk/forums/map.php
then select vehicle tuners, clicking pushpins gets up more info, hovering gives name and distance if youve set your potcode

topping to try and generate some more vag owners to join, currently the website is busy with a healthy flow of traffic and posts going through, however I would be happier if there were more vag owners, with more chat between vag owners
If you own a vag get registered
you get quite a few useful features, if you cant be arsed to read, free image hosting in your showroom, location benefits, brochure downloads, etc etc
cheers
