Level 8 now. As I'm playing in Hardcore mode I thought Lead Belly would be a useful perk early on. 
 
The strip is highlighted on my map now as theres a quest to do. I might go take a look or hold off and do some other quests first.

am crap at  this. keep  getting killed by creatures when trying to find new places. even put it on easy and still get ruined.

What level are you?? Level 5 you should be able to sort most out. VATS gives you a bit of time too.

Jim, do you keep trying to use VATS alot? I kept doing that and waiting for it to regen before shooting some more, and used to get slaughtered.  
 
got out of the habit now and only really use it if in trouble/sneaking.

Im wishing I played in Hardcore mode now. As you know being a mega Fallout 3 vet im actually finding this game very easy on the default difficulty. 
 
Level 9 now and still staying on the south side of the map doing quests and resisting temptation to hit the strip.

i had a hour or so last night, got out of vault 22 and did a couple ncr quests.. i have to level to get some explosive points for a quest.

am level 11 now, and yes seem to use that VATS alot, i just have trouble getting through armour, and those big scorpions kill me alot, or the flying things.

all this stuff i came across says needs level 50 or above, be it lockpick, repairing something, making things, science etc

Mine crashed in vats, killed someone, then I switched weapon and hit vats but I had no ap and it wouldn't go back out

Mine hasn't crashed at all and I've played it for a good 30 hours at least, really buggy though, creatures getting stuck in the ground and the like.
