But how many men do you see in a pub drinking red wine? Not many.

Any Alcohol will thin the blood, good if you have high cholesterol (SP)
also red wine
Red wine has been associated with a number of health benefits, including a lower rate of heart disease.
An ingredient in red wine may also prevent herpes, according to a recent study.
The ability of red wine to ward off colds may be due to its antioxidant properties, according to Professor Ron Eccles, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University.
Lifestyle factors - such as sipping red wine at home rather than drinking in crowded pubs - could also be a factor, he said.

My local is more like a trendy wine bar.
All the lads/men still drink pints though.
I'm a wine drinker.

no we have a point, that alcohol in moderation can be good for you, both socially and healthy
smoking doesnt generally tend to happen in moderation as you get addicted to it and has zero benefits.

A researcher at the Texas Southwestern Medical Center (May 1999) reported that those who consume moderate amounts of beer (one to two a day at the most) have a 30-40% lower rate of coronary heart disease compared to those who don’t drink. Beer contains a similar amount of ‘polyphenols’ (antioxidants) as red wine and 4-5 times as many polyphenols as white wine.
Alcohol has also been attributed of its ability to increase the amount of good cholesterol (HDL) into the bloodstream as well as help to decrease blood clots.

It has no medical benefits, granted. That's not to say it has no benefits though.

I never said smoking wasn't bad for you.
I drink. But I wouldn't say alcohol is good for you.

You asked for proof and it's just been given to you yet you still don't think alcohol is good for you take the blinkers off

drinking is such a stupid thing to compare as it doesnt affect others in the direct environment, the problem with smokers is you cannot stop it affecting others, that is the problem here.
noone cares about the dumb fucks who decide to smoke, its there choice, the problem is they are also affecting everyone else around them

We've established this isn't always the case. A lot of people drink too much and it affects others.
I do agree though, like I said earlier.

Like I've said I don't give a fuck about the smoking ban. I just wont smoke!
I can just understand both sides of the arguement as I'm not narrowminded.
People have been allowed to smoke where they want for the last god knows how many hundred years. Just seems a bit silly they are changing it now.

There aren't a significant amount of people stopping because of the ban, they just stand out in the rain and smell instead.

BTW... I've not read the whole thread, stopped at what happens with smoking on a telly set etc...
We read up on this, being a production company we had to know.... and I think it states somewhere that if it's written into the act you are allowed to smoke on set BUT not during rehersals (SP)
So for example, theatre people can smoke when they have people watching but not with an empty theatre... I think that's what it said any hoo.

tbh smokers cover thier own costs in terms of the extra pressure on the NHS and so forth so one would expect if less cigarettes are being sold that there would be less strain on the NHS and other services
