Best bet is go to a decent local bike shop. Speak to them. Tell them what you are after. Try some out and get sized up. Look at bikes around £800 mark.

Then go and buy one 2nd hand for cheaper.

I kow its not great for the LBS but with a fairly limited budget its best for you.

I'm slow as shit going around. I will probably have a first crack at the red route to get some feel back. Hopefully don't fall off and break a rib!

I'm 185cm/6ft 1 tall - can't decide whether to get a 19" or a 20" frame. How much difference can that 25mm make?

If you came into the shop Id suggest a 20.5". Go a size smaller if you like to chuck it about a bit.

Have a look at our sizing chart: http://www.ukbikesdepot.com/info/bikechart.php

Recommended size is a 20-22ish. Any other questions give us a ring, where open 7 days a week

This year I'm going to get back into mountain biking more seriously. I don't necessarily mean hardcore downhill stuff, just a combination of on and off road stuff on a regular basis. I'm also considering joining a local club.

I'm fairly happy with my bike (Specialized Hardrock Pro) but need to get some decent clothing/equipment.

What kind of clothes does everyone wear for mountain biking? Ideally I'd like some kind of padding for when I'm out on a long day.

All I have so far is mountain biking gloves and a helmet

Thanks chaps.

Endura humervee shorts with padded inners, hh base layer tops, gore alp x soft shell top and a cheap water proof jacket for when its bad, seal skin water proof socks and a osprey hydration pack. That's all I have. I don't bother with leggings as I'm not a girl and don't mind getting dirty.
I mostly do xc stuff though so depending what you prefer to do it may differ.

Pretty good advice that. You can't go wrong with Endura or even Madison stuff these days.

I wear leggings, but 3/4 length to protect the knees from fold weather. Have to look after your knees.

I've got Endura Humvees with padded liners, sometimes double up with by bib shorts. I've got an Endura base layer and then tend to wear a normal t-shirt on top of hat. I've raided Decathalon for a couple of cheap BTWIN out layers/waterproof jacket.

I've got a Camelbak Lobo which is big enough for bits and bobs needed.

I've got leggings but only wear if its baltic

Specialized gloves, Bell helmet. Need a new helmet at some point. Its a road helmet.

I wear a lot of Gore and Castelli clothes. Cant fault them. Tend to favour Gore Jerseys and Castelli shorts.

Dropped my road bike off for a service this morning. Told them under no uncertain terms to call me if anything expensive needs replacing

I read that under a certain temperature (I forget what the exact figure quoted was) you really must cover your knees. Ive been out without protecting them on some pretty chilly days and theyve turned blue.

I have some leggings but I prefer shorts with leg warmers. Just feel more comfortable to me.

Would be a tad edgy. Rocking up to see some of my 16 year old female students in lycra shorts, with my cocktail sausage on show.
