I just went and checked my oil and water. All fine, except in the water expansion tank, there is some white greasy stuff, floating in the water and in the cap. . .

It isn't supposed to. I don't think white stuff in the header tank is good news though. I think my head gasket is on its way out

Get a sniffer test done and if there is exhaust gasses in the expansion tank.....cry.
May be worth flushing the system and putting some fresh stuff in and then keeping an eye on it?
Maybe a compression test may put your mind at ease too?

Think I might have to - the fluid is pretty new. New rad etc back in February after my crash.

Tis a nasty job on the 12 volts as they have a timing chain 
When you start it in the morning does it missfire or can you hear water running behind the dash?

Sometimes it doesn't start right, no. But sometimes it does, and sometimes I hear a noise like water, but only when the engine is warm. . .
