Quick question - I assume you have to remove the sump first to do this?

ideally, what part of the sump is being helicoiled? the sump nut?

Yeah.

Well the thing is my oil sump issues are down to the sump plug and the gasket leaking.

A local garage put a helicoil in the sump last year you see, and before they did anything to the car the sump was not leaking at all.

So I am just trying to establish if they fucked up or not.

Car was taken to Ford on wednesday who changed the washer (for free) but they didn't change the plug because it's obviously not the Ford plug that's been used.

Ford have quoted me £485 inc. VAT to supply and fit a new sump/gasket/plug/washer but if I can get someone to re-do the helicoil and actually fit the gasket properly I'd rather do that as it'll be cheaper.

sump should be easy to replace, i took mine off just to get at a bolt for something else

can't you get a 2nd hand one, clean it up, then fit it

Yeah I know, sump must be made of gold or something

I just phoned the garage that did the helicoil, says he'll have a quick look at it at lunchtime but is basically saying "well it didn't leak until Ford worked on it and I'm confident we did a good job on it"

I'm guessing as it's a Duratec V6 that I could get a sump for a mk2 Mondeo V6 and it'll be the same?

BTW Steve - that garage said they wouldn't have removed the sump to fit the helicoil - surely there would be metal shavings in the sump if they've had to drill into it?

Well I went to that "good garage" a few minutes ago...

When I got there I had a bit of an intimidating reception - everyone was sat down by a table which was put up by their shutter doors, eating their lunch.

Having about 10 dodgy looking blokes just constantly staring at you as soon as you drive there wasn't the reception I had expected

Anyways, one of them supposedly tightened up the sump plug which he reckons was loose by 1/2 turn and says if it's leaking again come back next week.

Was blatently trying to get rid of me.

Think I'll take it elsewhere or worse case Ford if it's still leaking, bunch of amateurs.

I would try and source a second hand one.

If a garage didnt remove a sump when fitting a heli coil then I would question that, even for peace of mind id rather remove the sump. 1. to make sure no swarf is in the sump and 2. It would be easier to work on

I did ask that when I first phoned them this morning, he said:

"ahh that's the beauty of helicoils, you don't need to remove the sump to fit them"...

I dont fancy trying to drill out a hole in a sump upside down and trying to keep the drill square. Never used a helicoil but dont you drill it out and then fit the helicoil into the hole and the inside of the helicoil contains the thread?

I used a helicoil on a oil return pipe from the turbo on my tt and didnt remove the sump

The sump plug is on the side of the sump on our car not at the bottom. But yes I thought you were supposed to remove the sump first.

I didnt helicoil the sump plug, just one of the twoallen key bolts that holds the oil return in place. I wouldnt trust a helicoil on a sump plug

Gary - not really sure what your basing that on as ivehad little or nothing to do with you.... Its fine though you stick to 350bhp v6 novas


Also they cant be that good if its leaking, i didnt think the one i fitted was anything amazing

if a helicoil is fitted correctly it will be just as strong if not stronger as the origonal thread

The problem with using a helicoil on a sump is that if you dont get it to go in 100% straight it will leak. I speak from experience mine leaked worse than it did before when I did it to my old sump
