I'm seriously tempted! I love having an MPV and if anything I'd love a bigger one!
I'm wondering if these things drive like a VAN or if they are a little more refined:

Even better, pre2001 models to avoid getting raped on tax

In what way?
Noise, Accoustics, Ride?
These all seem to have auto boxes, I'm curious as to what they are like too..

Yes, had a few come through the garage for MOT's. Not bad but as said it feels like you're driving a van, loads of room, well built etc.

Can I ask why you would want such a car? Unless it is to haul stuff around. In which case buy a pick up truck?

Its a bit like a van, not as noisey tho, drove a brand new one and it died, opened the bonnet and had a look about to realise the pipe to the turbo had got disconnected

8 seats and fuck loads of load lugging space
Pick-ups drive like crap, are expensive to insure and handle worse than vans
The Navaro doesnt drive to bad but they are unreliable albeit not quite as prone to blowing up as an L200 lol

I take it you havent driven many pick ups as of late?
Mate had a d40 was reliable, never spent a penny on it.! Drove awesome. Auto, leather, nav, cruise, all that shizzle. Did 30 mpg whilst he had it (work, knocking about fairly steady). I loved it. Went all over the country in it. Was a pleasure to drive. Didnt handle to bad either. Only reason he bought a MK4 gsi astra was the fact he didnt have the money to buy another. (looking about £15000 for his spec and miles)
It was the d22 with the engine problems. Other mate has a 2002 warrior. And that is alot more farmer like. I Kinda see where you comming from with your comment.

I've driven modern Hi-Lux's, L200's, Navaro's.... The newer L200 drives ok but its way out of my budget.
£5k is my limit, its got to be a 'disposable car' for every day use.

i'd still go for a galaxy..they drive more like a car ,handle quite well, really roomy and top load lugger with the seats out...
done approx 50k miles in my y reg 2.3 petrol..watch the 5 speed auto box in 1.9td's though we had approx 30 at work and most boxes went around 100k miles

I can't imagine it'd be particularly cheap to run as an every day driver and when it goes wrong, it'll be expensive to fix.
I'd stick with the Zafira tbh, won't be a lot in it.
Plus it's probably awkward taking the seats & table out, so you can't actually shift as much gear.
Having the Zafira with flex7 seating must be really handy.

The V-Class CDI would better on fuel than my zaf by miles, plus its a van underneath so parrts are cheap The seats clip out easilly but finding somewhere to put them would be an arse.
But yeah the flexibility of the seats in the Zaf are second to none! The very rear seats fold flush into the floor and the middle seats roll back wards and fowards to where ever you want, fold up against the front setas or fold down flat..
I've had a Yougman 3 piece ladder in it (all seats folded, including passenger seat) and I've had a 5' x 7' ketter shed in her.

Keep the Zaf.
Or find a 2.0DTi one.

The 2.0DTi doesnt come in auto as far as I can see and its got to be an auto. Be fucked if I'm changing gear like a dick while stuck in traffic

Looks like there are a few:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/results/usedcars/postcode/rg100rr/radius/1500/make/vauxhall/model/zafira/fuel-type/diesel/transmission/automatic/sort/priceasc?logcode=s
But damn they are priced over the odds!
I could get a V-Class with half the mileage!
