No.

Not restricted the C16XE with ridiculous inlet just to meet emission laws.

150bhp from Lotus out of the box.

My view is that this is a pretty stupid and pointless thread tbh.

Genuine question, if that's the case why does an upgraded inlet not increase power to 150bhp? The only 1.6's you see with that kind of power are TB'd.

Daimo knows more about it than me, but I'm sure there were other things that were removed the lower the power. Better cams, exhaust etc.

Look at the increase you get from an inlet alone, 109bhp as standard with an inlet 120bhp, raise the rev limit and you gain a bit more say 125bhp and a lot more power top end.

Cams, exhaust manifold, decent exhaust system and you're looking at 140bhp, it won't have the torque of the C20XE but it still makes a rapid car.

The best one I ever saw setup with Mantzel/Cams/Exhaust/Raised limiter was Lee Mannings GSi, recorded a 6.39 0-60 with Datatron it was an absolute stormer.

Indeed, different cams, fueling managment, a more free flowing exhaust, totally different inlet manifold design, higher rev limit. This was before CAT's came into the equation and dogged the engines of power with stupid EU laws...

It used to much fuel and made the car lumpy and harder to drive at lower revs (blam cams and fueling).

tbh, I don't think a square box on top of a manifold is the most smoothest of air flowing designs in the world, and thats how powers made, by making the air route as smooth as possible in, and gasses as smooth as possible out, of the engine.

Lee mannings car was an absolute weapon, would destroy C20XE's with similar bhp and more torque (think Lees made 119lbft and 155bhp).

It was only the early C16 engines. Donnas made silly (still disputed) power, but i know of a few C16's in Europe that made silly power with minimal mods. There was also a green Nova over here than made nearly 160bhp with Mbox and cams.

Another was Paul Belshams. It only had 124bhp, but it pulled SERIOUSLY hard, I mean really hard... Fealt far quicker than my 2.0 did at lower speeds. 3 of us in it and it still pulled like a train. He must have been on the RR about 4x sorting out that poxy FSE power boost valve though

I don't care what any of the "sport" tuners say, the X16 just is not as potent as the C16 was for milder tuning. And SBD also saw consitiantly 10bhp more with the C16 with the same mods as the X16. C16 always pulled much harder through the revs, but hard to prove these days as most engines are old and like dogs....

Even Pete Knivetts (Mantzel importer) 1.6 with just a mantzel box and raised rev limit (7250rpm iirc) pulled well over the end of the clocks on quite a short bit of road, that car scared me it was so much faster than a standard sport

Ahhhhh memories, happy days...

TB only really work (as in get the times and performance) if your going the whole hog, cams, pocketted pistons, head work etc...

the reason, which daimo left out behind why they didnt leave the c16 with the orginal power was

1) mpg
2) the power was too close the the halo model of the xe powered astra gsi

if they had made one however, it would have looked like dave f's red b

Indeed, mpg was in the late teens

And certainly couldn't wipe the smug face off the legendary redtop now could it

Definitley not. As said, it would have been a cheaper, faster car than it's bigger brother in the Astra. Should have just left Lotus' engine as is.

I was reading an old Total Vauxhall yesterday and the little article they do each month at the front of the mag about the competition had the 205 GTi in it.

The writer commented on how they should have put the 2.0 8v SEH in the Nova to compete with the Pug, then went onto say "but then it would have totally inappropriate wheels, brakes & tyres"

Which sums up Vauxhall through the years and still to this day, they could make some superb cars if they just finished them, just a few extra bits here and there and the cars would/are fantastic.

Queue Damien...

If Vauxhall DID make it (with 5 stud though, which it wouldn't have been due to costs), it would have looked something like

The year this was taken, D4 looked at her best, D5 was still on the road with LET, and BradFinch still had the gold corsa.

God that was some time ago now, 2005 so long ago...
