You can smoke them yourself yes, there's a couple of ways to go about it though.
Take the glass off the headlight, and then spray the shiney bit of the headlight black.
Or
Buy some light smoked tinting spray, and spray the lens up.
Just keep an eye out on eBay, as they come up on there for around £50 every couple of days, they look much better than home attempts.

You need to remove the clips and put the whole light in the oven at about 100degreesC for 10 minutes, this will soften up the adhesive and allow the lens to be seperated from the case.
Obviously you cant paint the reflector directly behind the bulb.

Craft / Stanley knife also makes it easier to seperate the glass.

if you paint the reflector the head light will be dull as fuck and will have no pattern.
Resulting in your car being unsafe for the road and hopefully a copper will remove it from said road.
