I'm after a new car. The trouble is, I have quite tough criteria. Must be under £5k, diesel, and have under 40k on the clock baring in mind diesels are built & bought for high miles, this is a tall order.
Anyway, the only thing that seems to be on AutoTrader as a genuine find (i.e. not an Audi A3 that has done '110 miles') are French. Namely 206's and Clios.
AutoTrader search
They must be low priced for a reason! Just how bad are they?

EDIT: A few Corsa's have cropped up. But I didn't really want a 1990's Nova in a fancy frock.

Any reason why it has to be under 40k?

Clios are that bad (not just from my own, from any clio i've ever known anybody to have).
Not had experience of any others to judge but reports would suggest the same.

Because I'll be keeping it for possibly 5 years, minimum of 3 and do over 15k a year, and still want a bit of a resale value and reliability.

I used to own a 1.8 16v Clio love it to bits but you have to have tollorance and paitsionts, lol went through 3 alts and 2 clutches and a gearbox, them jb3's are like butter lol
the problem with a french car is the try to make them look unique and be top of the tech tree but they never get designed right and get over complecated. Maybe the French had wine breaks instead of tea lmao
The biggest example I can give you is the 5 turbo.
if the people who designed the engine actuly sat down and designed it correctly ( reliable) it would be nowhere near as powerful as it is today

Did 10k in 7 months in my 106. Only problem was the MAF gave up. Its now on 108k.
Previous to the 106 I would never buy french but it wouldn't bother me now

Well that kind of answered my question, although I suspect the 1.8 16v Clio was quite an old model.
That car can't break every 3k miles either
Looks like I'll have to save the pennies. Or get a Nova 1.3 CDTi

Clio's are truly terrible, Pow had one and my brother had the same. Interior felt cheaper than my car (saying something !), ran like shite and every time it went in to the garage it was guaranteed to cost circa £400.
Not all french cars are like it though, he had a saxo and a 106 and both were brilliant cars, i've had 2 frenchies and to be honest, less has gone wrong on these than on my corsa
Find a cheap 1.4 diesel c2 The way you drive you'll get 70mpg everywhere you go (i get 61 average in a 1.6 thats been tuned to the hills )

I would consider a C2, mainly for the fact they don't appear in that price bracket often. However I would prefer the 1.6 and in VTS guise. Other minimum requirements are alloys and air con
I only drive like a granny because the 12v has to be driven like a granny if I want it to last.
Do all C2's have the split rear hatch like a Land Rover? Saw one at a biking event and someone was sitting on it. Looks well handy

thanks.
£5k bracket really opens up options. Will have to save some pennies.
But "2 lady owners from new, used for school" is kind of a no no

Wont find one in that price bracket, prices are going up because they arent being made any more. Only get them on a 08 - 09 plates.
The 1.4 has good power and will genuinly give back high 60's, and with a good remap possibly into the 70's.
