In my experience, those 1.8 engines are fucking un-reliable and cost a absolute fucking fortune to repair when the electrics have catastrophic failure.

Are the 1.6 engines the same?!
Or is it just the TDi/1.8T engines to be looked at seriously?

At least you know what you're getting when you get a Wankel

Not a clue I'm afraid, I'm just astounded as to how unreliable my mum's A4 has been.

I've got a remapped 1.8T Sport mine is a 2001 on a Y Plate.

I've had no major problems, coil pack was replaced as a warranty recall when it was new but apart from that nothing major at all. They're an okay car, good at most things, suprisingly spacious, especially with the seats folded down - boot space is brilliant as the seats fold perfectly flat.

I'm not a huge fan as it doesn't give me the "grin" factor that my old corsa did. The A3 does everything for you to a point - it has useable power, traction control, good seats, handles very well but somehow I just don't enjoy driving it. With my corsa I had to plan every overtake, feel everything back through the wheel etc, but I guess that'll be the case with most modern cars

I'm thinking of a set of wheels and maybe suspension to change the look of it a bit, maybe then I'll enjoy it more

When things do go wrong, which inevitable is more likely with it being a 10yr old + car, it will be costly.

I don't use a main dealers for servicing, I used a local VAG Specialist and he's always been really reasonable - I had a waterpump/Cam Belt change and major servcie just after I bought it last year and iirc it was about £260 including the MOT which was significantly cheaper than Main dealer prices

Oh I wouldn't go main dealer. But i use an VAG specialist and he is considerably cheaper than a main dealer but it is still expensive imo.

Just been reading up and coil packs seem to be the only major problem and looks like less than £20 to remedy

a guy i know has an audi a3. looks naff.
the s3's are nice, but the a3 is soooo plain and its only 145-50bhp, which is poor for a 1.8T

Or an ECU, or a wiring loom, or more sensors, or more coilpacks, or a turbo or thermostats, or.......
